The Tiptons (USA)

Sunday, March 11th at 21.00, Menza pri koritu

Concert

Formerly known as The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, The Tiptons are coming to Ljubljana two years after their last show – introducing a new drummer and singer, Faith Stankevich.

Not to be bound by convention, The Tiptons do their own thing. Their repertoire ranges from New Orleans jump groove to hip hop, punk to East European, klezmer and beyond.

Originally founded in 1988, The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet chose its name as a tribute to saxophonist and pianist Billy Tipton, following the postmortem revelation that Tipton was “really” a woman who lived as a man for more than 50 years. Many believe that this allowed Tipton to pursue a career in the male-dominated world of jazz.

The Tiptons create some of the wildest sounds ever to come out of a sax quartet. The group features Jessica Lurie (Bill Frisell, The Indigo Girls, Ellen Fullman, Carlo Actic Dato, Nels Cline, The Pat Grainey Dance Company, Scott Amendola, Eyvind Kang, Wayne Horvitz, Danijel Zezelj) and Amy Denio (Fred Frith, Matt Cameron, Derek Bailey, Roy Paci, Eugene Chadbourn, Tom Cora, Wayne Horvitz, London Improvisers Orchestra, Pat Graney), original members and the lead composers of The Tiptons. They are joined onstage by Tobi Stone, Tina Richerson and percussionist Faith Stankevich.

Jessica Lurie: alto & tenor Sax, vocals
